Under the supervision of the HSE department, GDI held a mock fire drill on July 6, 2009 where employees were shown the evacuation procedures in case of an emergency.
The fire drill was a success as every participant managed to reach the assembly point in 4 minutes and 25 seconds, a great timing as anything less than 5 minutes is considered good in Health & Safety terms. It is necessary to be always prepared for any possible emergency; In the event of a fire, most people die due to smoke inhalation and not from the flames, which is why having an immediate evacuation scenario is crucial. Therefore, the HSE department takes full responsibility in training all employees how to deal with emergencies in the time of fire breaking.
Future plans for the HSE department includes sending the fire wardens for a refresher training with fire extinguishers and basic first aid. This is in addition to having the fire wardens participate in general office safety to benefit all staff.
Health & Safety is the cornerstone of GDI’s success and hence it is the company’s policy to keep raising the standard of safety and protection knowledge among the staff. Training staff to achieve swift evacuation during an emergency is of prime importance for GDI.
